Geographically, the hamlet of Valmir rises about 136 meters above sea level, along Strada Statel 433 of the Aso Valley, at the intersection connecting Carassai and Petritoli via a masonry bridge completed in 1956. The hamlet developed on a alluvional plain and partly extends onto the hillsides, which are the last remnants of an ancient escarpment of river erosion. Its land is composed mainly of alluvial soils and has traditionally been used for agriculture, especially for fruit and vegetable cultivation. In the past, these lands were worked by sharecroppers; today, they are managed by direct farmers.
The name Valmir is rather recent as an official toponym: the hamlet formaly established on August 27, 1979, when the Petritoli City Council considered a request from local resident for official recognition of the hamlet in Valdaso. The petition proposed three possible names ranked in order of preference by the voting citizens: Valmir, Valnova or Passovalle, followed by the designation “Petritoli”. The name Valmir was chosen because it combines the words “valley” and “M.I.R.,” which has various meanings: a reference to the Movimento Innovazione e Ristrutturazione (Innovation and Restructuring Movement), the Marian title of Mary Immaculate Queen, the name “Miriam” (a Hebrew variant of Mary), and the Latin root meaning something “marvelous” or “beautiful,” to recall the beauty of the valley.
The hamlet of Valmir is home to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the community’s main place of worship. Built in 1965 during a period of village expansion, the church reflects Valmir’s transformation from a small rural settlement to a more developed center. In 1975 the parish house was added, featuring a chapel, a meeting hall, and sports facilities to serve the community.
